Dear George Holmes,
Where do you get your ideas?

My ideas for Growing Up in the Valley came from life experiences as a child and adolescent during the 1940s and 1950s in Scranton, Pennsylvania. A major catalyst for the book was coming from an American second-generation Irish family where the oral tradition of telling stories about real people and real events was quite popular and had been from generation to generation. The oral story-telling tradition continued in my own family, where I would tell stories of my growing-up to my daughter and son as they grew up. My now-adult children suggested that I put my stories in written form for my grandson, Jack. This effort yielded my book, Growing Up in the Valley. In some ways the book was more difficult than an academic book, because the material is so personal, and in many instances, emotionally charged.

For the rest of the story, you’ll need to read Growing Up in the Valley .
